What is the Energy Efficiency for Small Business Program?

The Energy Efficiency for Small Business Program offers an energy assessment, a tailored action plan and a rebate of up to $5,000 for making energy efficiency improvements. This program can save you money and reduce your impact on the environment.

What happens at an Energy Efficiency Assessment?

Registered Assessors meet with you to discuss your energy consumption. They will walk around your premise to assess your lights, electrical appliances, air-conditioning, communications cupboard etc. They will then make recommendations on what could be changed to reduce your energy (electricity, gas and water) consumption - and your bills!
Often small changes like making better use of natural light or decreasing your air conditioning thermostat by one degree in summer can make a big difference to the cost of your power bills over a year and reduce carbon pollution.

What is the result of an Assessment?

After your onsite energy assessment, you will receive an action plan to help you save energy by improving the efficiency of existing equipment or installing new equipment that is more energy efficient. Return on investment timeframes are included in the plan for each action identified.
A rebate of up to $5,000 is available to pay for half of your costs to implement action plan recommendations that have a return on investment period of more than two years. Rebates will be paid for improvements to lighting (including skylights), heating, ventilation and air conditioning, boilers, air compressors, commercial refrigeration, electric motors and insulation.

What are the benefits?

Over the long term, significant energy and financial savings can be achieved by operating existing equipment more efficiently or replacing outdated equipment. For example, switching to compact fluorescent lighting can cut electricity use by up to 75 per cent, and replacing air conditioners that are more than 10 years old can reduce your energy costs for heating and cooling by up to 40 per cent.

Who can take part?

You can take part if your business spends up to approximately $20,000 a year on electricity or employ up to roughly 10 people.
Alternatively, if you are a medium to large business, you can register for the DECC’s Sustainability Advantage Energy Saver program {www.environment.nsw.gov.au/sustainbus} to help you become more energy efficient.
